Writing Assignment:

Read "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" and write an essay of 600 words in which you go through the steps outlined below to develop a strong thesis sentence about the story's theme. Then flesh out your argument into an essay, supporting your thesis with evidence from the text, including quotations.

To post your response, click on the Discussion Tab at the top of the page, paste in your essay/response and click post. Then everyone can read all the responses; I can read and grade, and everyone can respond to at least two people in the class in no less than 150 words.

Determining A Story's Theme
  • List as many possible themes as you can from the story.
  • Circle the two or three most important points and try to combine them into a sentence. The sentence is then your preliminary thesis.
  • Relate particular details of the story to the theme you have spelled out. Consider plot details, dialogue, setting, point of view, title--any elements that seem especially pertinent.
  • Check whether all elements of the story fit your thesis. If not, reevaluate your thesis.
  • Have you missed an important aspect of the story? Or, have you chosen to focus on a secondary idea, overlooking the central one?
  • If necessary, rework your thesis until it applies to every element in the story.
